Leaving the UAE: how to sell everything before you move

Moving out of the UAE usually means a whole home to clear in a few weeks. The trick is selling in the right order, so the slow things go first and you are not left sleeping on the floor.

The short answer

  • Work back from the day you hand back the keys: everything must be collected before then.
  • List big furniture six weeks out, clothes and kids' things at four, small items at two.
  • Keep your UAE bank account open until your last Loop payout has arrived.

Start from the day you hand back the keys

Write down three dates: the day your shipping company collects, the day you hand back the keys, and the day you fly. Everything you sell has to be collected from your home before the key handover, so that is your real deadline.

Then split your home into three piles: ship, sell, and give away. Be strict with the ship pile. Shipping is usually charged by volume, so a cheap bookcase can cost more to move than to buy again.

Six weeks out: list the big furniture

Sofas, beds, wardrobes and dining tables take the longest to sell and the longest to collect, so they go first.

Four weeks out: clothes, bags, shoes and kids' things

Go through wardrobes while you still have time to photograph things properly. Kids' clothes, strollers and high chairs they have outgrown sell well to other families staying in the UAE.

Two weeks out: kitchen, decor and small items

Lamps, mirrors, rugs, kitchen kit and decor are quick to list and quick to collect. Price them to go: at this stage, a sale this week beats a better price next month.

The final week: drop prices or donate

Anything still listed a week before the key handover should be priced to sell or given away. Remember that pickups need someone at home, so do not leave collections for the day you fly.

Sort your money before you close your bank account

Loop pays sellers to a UAE bank account. The buyer's payment is held until the item is delivered and they have had 24 hours to check it, and then it is paid out. Keep your UAE account open until the payment for your last sale has arrived.

Questions people ask

Can I sell on Loop after I have left the UAE?

No. A courier or helpers collect each item from your UAE address, so everything has to be sold and collected while you are still here.

When do I get paid?

After delivery the buyer has 24 hours to check the item, then the money is paid to your UAE bank account. You keep 100% of your asking price.

Do I have to meet the buyer?

No. The buyer pays in the app and Loop arranges collection from your door. You only need to be home to hand the item over.
