The short answer
- Strollers and high chairs are good pre-loved buys: check the fold, brakes and harness.
- In the UAE, children up to four must ride in a car seat. The fine is AED 400 and four black points.

- The fold. Ask the seller for a photo folded and unfolded. A stiff or sticking fold is the most common fault.
- Brakes and wheels. Brakes should hold on a slope, and wheels should turn without wobbling.
- Harness and buckles. Every strap should click in and release cleanly.
- Fabrics. Ask whether the seat and hood come off to wash.
- What is included. Bassinets, rain covers and adapters add a lot of value, so check they are in the photos.
High chairs: what to check
- It stands steady on the floor and the legs lock in place.
- The harness and tray are both there and clip in properly.
- No cracks in the plastic, and it is easy to wipe clean.
Car seats: the rules in the UAE
Under UAE federal traffic rules, children up to four years old must travel in a child safety seat, and a child must be at least 10 years old and 145 cm tall to sit in the front. Breaking these rules carries a fine of AED 400 and four black points.
Car seats: only buy used if you can answer yes to all of these
- Has it never been in a crash? A seat can be weakened by a crash without showing any damage, so you need to trust the seller's answer completely.
- Is it within its expiry date? Car seats have a manufacture date and usually an expiry date on a label or moulded into the plastic. Ask for a photo of it.
- Are all the labels still on? You need the model number and date to check for recalls.
- Has it not been recalled? Check the model on the manufacturer's website.
- Are all the parts and the manual there?
If the answer to any of these is no or "not sure", buy that seat new and save money on the stroller instead.
